Stereophonics - London, 1998
This shot came from an idea that Kelly Jones had, based on an old Annie Leibovitz photograph he had seen. We went for the same kind of aesthetic as a starting point, but rather than shooting in front of prison gates (used in the original image) we used a football pitch near London’s Westway, close to their label, V2 Records. The main girl in the shot was a model called Lucy [Joplin] who was going out with Mark Keds [The Senseless Things/Jolt] at the time. We also had most of the record company in the image as extras.
This photo holds a very special place in my heart and catalogue. It was used for the band’s 1999 album ‘Performance And Cocktails’ artwork, and I’ll never forget the feeling I had seeing my work on billboards all over London.
