We are excited to introduce to you the latest member of the Behind The Gallery family... Erroll Jones. Erroll’s early friendship with the iconic band The Prodigy saw him documenting their early gigs, capturing moments that would remain largely unseen for years. It wasn't until the quiet of lockdown that he unearthed a treasure trove of negatives and transparencies, leading to the creation of his captivating collection, ‘My Mates’ Band,’ featuring stunning candid moments captured - most of which had never been published before.

When did you first start taking photos?

I first started taking photos as a 17 year old after my old boss Jerome Hunt gave me a broken Praktica Super TL camera. I was ridiculously excited, I mean 17 year old boys just didn’t have SLR cameras. I got it repaired and was happy to spend a large part of my meagre income on film and processing. I would shoot anything back then but really like photographing people and events, whether it was a gig, wedding or the office Christmas party.

Who or what inspires you?

There are so many great photographers whose work I get a real buzz from. Anton Corbijn, Steve Gullick, most recently but also the likes of Helmut Newton, Ellen Von Unworth, and Richard Avedon to name but a few. But there’s great photography everywhere nowadays and it is really accessible. I often find myself screen-grabbing images that pop up on my insta feed thinking wow, I wish I had done that.

What is one of the most memorable shoots, you’ve photographed and what made it special?

I mainly shoot portraits and events and quite a lot of it in the corporate sector nowadays. But a while back I did the behind the scenes photography for Band Aid 30, where a host of Top UK and Irish artists re-recorded the song ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’ to raise money for the 2014 Ebola crisis. It was a long, mentally and physically exhausting unpaid day but I had a great time, witnessing the impressive Bob Geldof pulling the strings and all the artists (ego-free) happy to play their part and not being at all bothered that there was a photographer and film crew constantly in their face even in the sanctuary of the Green Room.

Which is your favourite photo on Behind The Gallery?

My favourite Behind the Gallery photo? That’s not an easy one to answer, so I have more than one if that’s allowed. Of the live shots it has to be Johnathan Rach’s ‘Trent Kicking The Keys’. And of the portraits, a toss-up between Kevin Westenberg’s ’Nick Cave - Mojo’ and Scarlett Page”s Brain Molko - Placebo’. No analysis needed, they’re just great fucking images.
